Remember when the TV cart rolled into class?
Before every classroom had a smartboard, streaming video, and a laptop for every student, there was the TV cart.
You could hear those wheels coming down the hallway, and somehow the entire mood of the classroom changed. A television strapped to a rolling cart, a VCR underneath it, and a teacher trying to get the tape to play could turn an ordinary school day into an event.
For many of us who attended Black schools or grew up with Black teachers, memories like these are part of our shared school experience. The technology changed, but the memories of the classrooms, teachers, classmates, and moments that shaped us stayed with us.
That’s what Black School Nostalgia is about: remembering the little things about school that we didn’t realize we’d miss.
